Excerpt from “Max Havelaar”

I admit, I have not been here long. But I trust that the question asked one day will be what I did, and whether I did it well, not whether I did it in too short a time. To me, any time is too long when it is marked by extortion and oppression, and on me every second would weigh heavy which, owing to my negligence, my dereliction of duty, my ‘spirit of compromise,’ had been spent in misery by others.

  1. I am a Dutch but I never read this book. We did spoke about it at school during history class. But the book is been on my list now for long time.

    1. I finished reading it yesterday. I thought it was good but not amazing–I have a feeling it’s a little like Uncle Tom’s Cabin, more important for its historical impact than for its literary quality. What would you say are the best or most important Dutch books? What does everyone read in school? It’s going to be a long time until I get to the Netherlands on my list but I always like recommendations! 🙂
