Favorite Books

These star ratings are not, and cannot be, a judgement of quality. I am not qualified to judge literary merit, especially when I’m reading books from other cultures without the context to fully understand or appreciate them. That being said, there are definitely some that I have enjoyed reading more than others, so I’m giving them a very arbitrary star rating to help quantify my enjoyment. Five stars means it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, possibly life-changing, would recommend unreservedly to everyone I know. Four and a half stars: this book was highly enjoyable and/or moved me deeply, I will remember it for years, would read again if I didn’t have a list of 2000 books to get through in the next forty to fifty years. Four stars: Similar to nine stars, but with some minor flaws–maybe there were some boring parts or the prose was a little uneven or the story wasn’t quite believable–but still great books all the same.
