    1. Oh good, thank you! It’s always nice to have any of my choices confirmed, since a lot of the time I don’t really have any idea whether the books I’ve chosen will be any good. I’ve had several misses lately so it’s nice to know ahead of time that books are going to be worth the time it takes to read them. If you have any other suggestions I’d love to hear them!

  1. Though we don’t see eye-to-eye on Toer, I will–sorry!–add to your Indonesia list by suggesting Louis Couperus (yes, Dutch), who wrote “The Hidden Force.” It’s really an Indonesia book. I’d also add–sorry again–Eka Kurniawan as well, though I preferred “Beauty Is A Wound to “Man, Tiger.”
Am fascinated by the site, I have to add, though I have generally seen sights devoted to “reading around the world” and been, uh, less than impressed. This is the first one I’ve seen that gives evidence of a thinking, sentient being behind the project. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you, I think. I’m curious what your opinion of Toer can be, since I haven’t reviewed “This Earth of Mankind” yet and gave it a middling rating (3.5/5). Do you love him or hate him?
I’m adding “Beauty is a Wound” to the list. Louis Couperus, having (as far as I can uncover with a quick google search) spent only 5 years living in Indonesia, doesn’t really qualify by my criteria. Anyway, I’ve been on Indonesia for a few months now and have read 14 Indonesian books, and I’m getting itchy to move on to the next country.

      1. Sorry to have offered what appears, in retrospect, to be a less-than-complimentary compliment. It truly was intended to be a compliment. I have enjoyed poking around and, unlike the sense I have gotten from other similar sites, yours gives a true sense of doing this from a love of reading and of having thought a lot about things. I simply don’t get that sense from other sites which, by and large (though not exclusively), give me more a sense of crossing another place off the list.
I was reacting to what I thought was three stars; my error. I loved the first two and a half books of the quartet. I enjoyed the third and fourth a bit less, but overall found it a remarkable accomplishment. And I think it was due to my own issues with where Toer chose to go, not with the quality of the writing or his perceptiveness.
Agreed that Couperus is “really” Dutch, but I think you’ll find that particular work is quite astonishing in its sense of place and its insight.
Though Kurniawan was disorienting for some time (he has a large cast of characters and keeping track of them initially was tough), he also moves around in time. But not only is the story fascinating on a plot level alone, the metaphorical ties to the history of Indonesia are masterful. Plus, frankly, I found the writing compelling and fluid.
And speaking of Tan Twan Eng (although we’ve moved over to Malaysia), I’ll be curious to know your reaction as well. I read “The Garden of Evening Mists” and though I found it an absolutely beautiful book in many ways, after some time had passed, I found it less…substantial (for lack of a better word)…than I initially had. Still, recommended.
Finally: understood completely about moving on. Which, of course begs the question, what (or where) is next?

  2. Next is the Philippines, then Brunei, and then Malaysia. I’m trying to move through the list geographically, so I can get a sense of the larger cultural elements and the way neighboring countries influence each other. I’ve got four and a half more books to get through before I can move on from Indonesia.
I found Toer’s writing to be of much higher quality than a lot of the other books I read for Indonesia; however, I was troubled by his treatment of Annelies and her relationship with Minke; I found myself fairly appalled at the doctor who kept telling Minke the only way to “fix” Ann was for him to just make her entirely dependent on him…I mean, that was bound to backfire at some point. Plus, while the story does seem to be couched in an Indonesian tradition of Romeo-and-Juliet-type romance, I just do not believe in love at first sight and thus found the relationship unconvincing. And, lastly, I just didn’t love the experience of reading it. I wasn’t anxious to pick it up again when I had put it down. That’s really my main criterion for whether something breaks the four-star barrier or not.
I’ve got “The Gift of Rain” as my Tan Twan Eng offering, but maybe I should switch to “The Garden of Evening Mists,” seeing as it was shortlisted for the Man Booker while the other was only longlisted. I have definitely had the experience of loving a book and then having it fade in my memory; conversely, a few books (“Tu” by Patricia Grace comes to mind) have not impressed me that much while I was reading them but then have stayed in my mind and made more of a lasting imprint than I would have expected. It’s probably something that has always happened, but I’ve only noticed it since I started keeping a blog, and writing about books six months or a year after I’ve read them.

  3. Actually, you did give Toer three stars, not three-and-a-half. No matter. I understand your points and, had I felt the same, I would consider three stars a generous rating. At the end of the day, we simply come to the book from different places and I firmly believe that all readings are fair so long as they are undertaken in good faith and reasonable. So we’ll just disagree on this one.
Whichever book by Tan you select, I’ll be curious for your reaction. I look forward to “The Gift of Rain” simply because I enjoyed “The Garden of Evening Mists” so much in many ways. I’d also imagine you’ll enjoy the Aw; I’ve read several of his and found them all impressive works.
I think, by the way, your plan of getting the larger cultural context is very wise–I wish it had occurred to me.
Interesting observation about the memory of books fading. I find sometimes that the impression a book made was so deep that I recall the impression many, many years later but recall little about the book itself.

  4. I lived in Sweden for a year so it’s cool that you have books from Scandanavia on your list. Will definitely try some of them! Thanks for the good information, it’s always great to discover another active/avid reader.

    1. Thank you so much for these great suggestions! I read books from Oceania in 2016-2017; a lot of these have come out since then so it will be great to circle back around and catch up with newer works. You’re right that some of these islands weren’t even represented on my original list, so it’s great to have suggestions for a more complete survey. I didn’t include Hawaii as a distinct category, although it probably makes more sense to read it with Polynesian literature rather than mainland US. Thank you for stopping by, and thank you again for giving me some great new works to add to my (ever-growing) list!
